We talk games.

Hold It! It won’t be long before Phoenix Wright fans get to utter that panicked phrase again. Looks like the next Phoenix Wright game, a spinoff called “Gyakuten Kenji” (Turnabout Kenji) is scheduled to release on May 28 in Japan.

Kenji? If that name doesn’t ring a bell, perhaps “Perfect Prosecutor Edgeworth” might mean something more to you. The spinoff game, reported to take place during Trials and Tribulations (the third game of the Ace Attorney series), puts players in the role of Phoenix’s on-again, off-again adversary and his trusty partner Dick Gumshoe. Although the game won’t feature the infamous court scenes from the original Ace Attorney series, it does feature similar gameplay in its 3 “phases.”

  • The Investigation phase: Scour a crime scene for clues.
  • Logic phase: Combine evidence you’ve gathered into a plausible story for a case.
  • Confront phase: Listen to testimony from witnesses and try and contradict them with evidence you’ve collected.
  • The only thing objectionable about this news is that, given the track record of the Ace Attorney series, it will probably be at least another 6 months after the Japanese release before North American gamers get their Edgeworth fix.

In related news, the Ace Attorney stage musical is set to debut in Japan in February, and is being performed by the Takarazuka Revue, an all-women acting troupe. The stage play’s official site can be found here along with Capcom’s official Gyakuten Saiban (Ace Attorney blog).

    1. I’m not sure if I should import this or wait it out. If it’s like the past PW games after the first, it’s a chance they’ll have a international language option.

    2. The first 3 games in the series were ports of GBA games, so they had the time to start the translations early (the port to DS probably didn’t take that long). Unfortunately I have a gut feeling we’ll see something more like what happened with Apollo Justice, which means no language option.

      I hope I’m wrong… but I’d be willing to bet I’m not.

    4. Yeah I sadly think Mysteriousm is on point with this one…

    5. yea I keep forgetting the first 3 games are ports. So much for that shot.
