Pushing Play

Gaming. For Everyone.

When the first trailer of Killzone 2 was shown two years ago, everyone flipped their proverbial lid over the way it looked. It spawned an almost fanatical fanbase overnight. As someone who played the original Killzone to completion, I knew that it would take more than fancy graphics to win me over.

So, what does this game offer that sets it apart from other shooters? As far as I can tell, nothing. I watched all twelve gameplay videos from Gamersyde, and nothing struck me as particularly innovative. Like many other shooters on the market today, it’s almost completely devoid of colour. The colourless environments look extremely sharp, but boring. The voice acting isn’t bad, but some of the in-game remarks were repeated quite a few times: “Is all this blood… mine?” For the third time…. yes it is. There are turret sequences, sniper sections, tank battles, and other seemingly obligatory tropes. The main character is yet another rugged-looking white guy, joining the ranks of Nathan Hale (Resistance 2), “Psycho” Sykes (Crysis Warhead), and other countless Jason Statham look-alikes who apparently all go to the same over zealous barber. The cover system was pretty cool, but other than that, it just looks very rudimentary.

Will it be a decent game? Of course. Will it be OMGWTFBBQ BEST GAME EVARZ? Definitely not. I’m afraid anyone who believes this game will be the savior of the PS3 hasn’t looked too closely at White Knight Chronicles.

Big-ups to lolscreenzors for the pic.

  1. I don’t mean to hate or anything, but do we really need another generic console shooter?

  2. Apparently we, the consumers, just can’t get enough of them!

  3. [...] Watch some Killzone action [...]

  4. People flipped their lid because when the pre-rendered trailer was released, 360 fanboys went crazy laughing about how the actual game play would never live up to that. When it did, 360 fanboys everywhere suffered a major burn and both 360 and ps3 fanboys knew it, which generated a lot of hype. Agreeably, much of the hype about this game is based on the graphics but it feels like there’s to much riding on it for guerrilla to screw it up, i doubt it will be mediocre. As far as generic shooters go, i don’t see what makes other games seem so great. Gears of war 2 felt like an expansion of the first with too many cave levels, all of which looked very similar, and it got fantastic reviews. Halo 3, or should i say Halo 2.5 is another example of the same crap that got fantastic reviews. So what is it that makes these shooters so great then?
