Hour Play is a review format that looks at the introduction of a game rather than the game in it’s entirety. In Hour Play we judge the game based strictly on an hour of gameplay, not including cut-scenes, menus, or character customization.
Gears of Wars (the first one) came out of nowhere and helped define the 360. A lot of people (myself included) who were lured into the current age of gaming with it’s stylized graphics and incredible gameplay; a housemate had the game and spurred me to purchase my own 360 so we could play together. I picked up the sequel at a launch event at Blockbuster here in Toronto, and I couldn’t wait to get home to give it an Hour Play.
Hit the jump to see what I thought after a solid hour of gameplay.
Gears of War 2 = Gears of War 1 plus some polish and more plot.
Will I play again? Why do you think this review was so short? I have to get back to playing!

For some reason I cannot work a console FPS control scheme. The dual-analog thing just cannot click in my brain.
It’s a shame, since 65% of all console releases these days are FPSes
I feel the exact same way… but GoW and other 3rd person shooters seem to work alot easier than straight 1st person affairs like bioshock or Farcry 2.
It’s torture to have the game in my bag but have my 360 back at my dorm. Come Sunday, Locust will die.
I’d like to say I’m surprised - but somehow, I’m not. A lot of these shooter games seem to be on a copy-paste-release conveyor belt. The concept is great, but to not change it up much isn’t worth the price or time of a game.
This game is more of an expansion rather than a sequel. I agree, the price is not worth its content, but we have to realize they’re selling the name not the game. It’s sad but it works.
Regardless of the price I feel that since Gears of War 1 was already near the pinnacle of perfection; it was hard to improve upon for 2. So the small additions in plot, features, and monsters in conjunction with the more “freedom” in movement (I say freedom loosely as a comparison to how linear the first Gears game was) still satisfied my gamer need.
Love the site, fellas. Just joined.
I was a bit disappointed to find myself running around in more boring caves in Gears 2, but it was worth the asking price just for Horde mode. Have a massive wait to connect to regular non-friend death matches, though.
