DSi vs. DS lite - 7 Changes

Posted in News by jkarsemeyer

Last night Nintendo announced the new DSi; the evolution of their DS platform. The new model sports a range of upgrades, and we’ve outlined seven of the ways in which our beloved handheld has evolved.

Hit the jump to see if it’s worth giving your DS to your little sister and grabbing one of the new DSi’s.

Camera - While 2 cameras have been added, only one is visible while playing your games (the other is on the backside). This camera subscribes to the apple webcam mentality that you should ALWAYS have a lens pointed at you.

Finish - The DS Lite had a slightly shiny glossed finish, while the new one seems to be a bit more matte. Maybe this will mean less greasy fingerprints!

Power button - The DS Phat had the power button on the face. The Lite went with the power slider on the side of the system. It looks like the new DS is bringing it back to the old school and putting a power button on the face of the unit. It looks like it doesn’t stick out at all so it is probably pretty hard to hit accidentally.

Screen -
Although it’s tough tell in the above picture because the systems aren’t to scale, the new DS screen is .25 inches larger diagonally. The resolution remains the same.

Inputs - The new DSi has ditched the gameboy advance slot in favor of an SD card slot. Children with old games cry while hackers rejoice.

Online Store - The new DS will feature an online store ala iphone and PSP. This will be a great way for Nintendo to increase their revenue by having children ‘accidentally’ run up their parents credit cards buying them crazy poke-mans.

Size - The DSi has been working out and trimmed down 12% of its size. WiiFit Mobile confirmed?

All in all… it seem’s like someone at Nintendo got an iPhone and was like ‘daaaaaamn, our DS should do all this crap too!’. Alot of the features seem to be ‘inspired’ by the iPhone… and even the DSi name seems to be a dyslexic homage to Apple’s phone.

So what do you think… is it worthy of an upgrade if you already own a DS?

  3. This upgrade just doesn’t seem with it to me. The cons outweigh the pros.

    No MP3 playback? No thanks.
    .3 MP camera? Pass
No GBA Slot? It’s not me, It’s you.

I’ll stick with my Lite, thanks.

  4. You mean 3MP camera, not 0.3. And it does support MP3’s and AACs

Actually, they’ve already confirmed playback of music - it even has a strange editor built in that can apparently change the tempo and various other things about what you’re listening to. I read somewhere you can even, say, reduce the vocals so that you only hear the instrumentals. I have a feeling that video playback isn’t going to be too hard to achieve, either.

I’m more interested in the DSWare - will we see downloadable versions of various GBA, GBC and GB games to counter the lack of a GBA slot (the added advantage of the GBC/GB games would be a great advantage)? Heck, will the DSWare have it’s own Virtual Console? I’d love to play Game Gear games on my DSi…
